The Social Network

The Social Network is based around the design, creation and law suit regarding the popular networking site face book. The film its self follows the story line of the creator, Mark Zuckerberg and starts with his girlfriend breaking up with him. Mark then goes onto getting revenge by putting pictures of college girls up on a comparing website. His technical and computer skills get noticed by twin brothers from Harvard who wish to hire him to help design the site for Harvard Networking. Mark then develops this idea and creates his own project 'face book.' The story continues to show the immediate success of face book and how the Harvard twins claim that he stole their idea. It also shows the breakdown of his friendship with co-founder Eduardo Daverin who begins to be left out of key modifications to the site and business deals.
The movie was a huge success all over the world, many viewers fascinated about how their favorite networking site was created and why. It had a budget of forty million and made a gross revenue of more than two hundred million. The film was nominated for many awards including winning three Academy Awards and four golden globe awards.
Face book today has more than 600 million users, most of which log on daily. Most of face books financing comes from advertising for a variety of different things such as shopping online and links to other sites of interest. Face book has had many battles with privacy, although people can make their profiles private, most people leave them open showing contact details and pictures that other users can access without them knowing.
Mark Zuckerberg now twenty six years old is still president of the social networking site and continues to work on improvements including several changes to the sites layout since it launched in 2004. He was the youngest billionaire in 2008 and in 2010, he became Times 'Man of the Year.' A key feature about his personality which was portrayed in the movie was that although he had a very high IQ, Zuckerberg had a low EQ which means that he was not really emotionally aware or cared about other peoples feelings.

Summary of Long Tailed Theory

The long tailed theory is basically the way in which the market of products can increase and decrease depending on their popularity and brand. Due to the internet, big blockbuster films are unlimited and readily available as stores online can hold thousands of products in huge warehouses to be transported when ever. This is represented by the large shaded section of the graph. The short tail represents the niche products such as rare unknown bands and artistic movies which don't make it on the big screen. These films although smaller in demand have a constant flow as well as they are always available online, rather than in shops like HMV which tend to stock only the big films that will sell at the time.
